This is a question we are getting more and more frequently from users of our Instagram Feed. The short answer is yes (in more than one way, in fact), but there are certain things for you to consider.
Instagram shows creators exactly who viewed their stories through the built-in viewer list. For users who want to monitor competitors, check trends, or browse privately, that visibility can be a problem.
In this guide, I explain three ways to view Instagram stories anonymously, including third-party viewers, secondary accounts, and offline viewing tricks.
In this article:
- Use an Anonymous Instagram Story Viewer
- Create a “Finsta” (Secondary Instagram Account)
- Use Airplane Mode to View Stories
I should also mention that nothing is 100% foolproof, but these are three ways I know of to view Instagram stories without being seen.

1. Use an Anonymous Instagram Story Viewer
I've researched and tested both Instanavigation and Instagram Story Viewer, and they both work well. However, be aware when using them.
I must disclose that they could pose risks to your Instagram privacy and security and perhaps violate Instagram's terms of service. Please do your own research first.
What is Instanavigation?
InstaNavigation is a service that allows you to view and download Instagram Stories anonymously. Enter the username of an Instagram account you want to access, including Stories, without revealing your identity or requiring an Instagram account.

InstaNavigation prioritizes your privacy by not requiring account registration or login details. It does not store personal information or track your activity.
The service uses SSL encryption to protect users' browsing activity.
While viewing content anonymously is the primary feature, the service also lets you download content, including stories and posts, from public profiles.
All the features of InstaNavigation are offered free of charge.
Instagram Story Viewer
Instagram Story Viewer is a similar tool that allows you to view and download Instagram Stories privately. It uses security encryption, does not require signing up or logging in, and is free to use.
How to view stories anonymously with a viewer
- Copy the Instagram username of the public account
- Open an anonymous story viewer website
- Paste the username into the search field
- Browse their stories, reels, or highlights anonymously
Pros
- No Instagram account required
- Your name never appears in the viewer list
- Some tools allow downloads
Cons
- Works only for public profiles
- Some tools may pose privacy risks
- May violate Instagram’s terms depending on usage
Best use cases
- Competitor research
- Social media inspiration
- Trend monitoring
2. Create a “Finsta” (Secondary Instagram Account)
Some people choose to create a secondary, anonymous account to view Instagram Stories and Reels. This method keeps their main account private but requires them to manage another account.
This is the oldest and most common method. I assume the first person to use it was someone trying to determine whether their partner was cheating, but no one knows for sure.
What does Finsta mean?
Finsta stands for a fake Instagram account. It is a second account you would create to mask who you truly are, allowing you to browse Instagram without anyone knowing it is you.
Why people use a Finsta
A “Finsta” (fake Instagram) is a secondary account used to browse content without revealing your real identity.
How to create one
- Log out of your main account
- Sign up with a different email address
- Avoid using your real name or profile photo
- Use it only for browsing
Pros
- Simple to set up
- Works for both stories and profiles
Cons
- Requires managing another account
- Instagram may link accounts via device or IP
3. Use Airplane Mode to View Stories

I discovered this method not that long ago, and it seems to work just fine. After loading Stories on your device with an internet connection, switch your device to airplane mode to view them offline.
Once you have viewed it, close the Instagram app before going online again. However, due to Instagram's caching and updating policies, this method might not be fully reliable.
How this method works
Instagram loads several stories into your device cache when you open the app. If you switch to airplane mode afterward, you can sometimes watch those stories offline before Instagram records the view.
Steps
- Open Instagram and let stories load
- Turn on airplane mode
- Watch the story
- Force close the Instagram app before reconnecting
Limitations
- Only works for preloaded stories
- May stop working if Instagram changes caching behavior

Whether you opt for a Finsta account, use airplane mode, or try a third-party service, it's crucial to prioritize your security and adhere to Instagram's guidelines.
Regardless of what you choose, always consider your privacy and the reliability of a method, and never violate the terms of service.
Being informed and cautious lets you discreetly enjoy Instagram content without revealing your identity.
